Today we talk with Marty Richards who recently set up yet another coffee shop in my local area of West End, but with a twist. I asked him how he could enable himself to stand out in an area with a multitude of coffee shops and what makes him different.

So What is Twitter?
Often in a conversation I will casually mention that I heard, or said “on Twitter…” some particular piece of news or information. Then whomever I’m talking to would would glaze over and not have any idea of what I’m talking about or they may ask “what’s that?”
The funny thing is that is actually a very difficult question to answer. It’s said in official circles that Twitter is a micro blogging service, but frankly I have no idea what that means.
So before I go any further lets outline what we do know.

As it’s now the end of 2008 I thought I’d just like to reflect briefly and thank everyone who has been on this journey with me.

Thanks Nikki J
I had only just launched the podcast at the start of the year. Since then I’ve posted 30 Your Story Episodes and 18 Addendum Episodes. Along with many blog posts about the things that interest me. I’m reasonably happy with that 🙂
Initially I was still struggling a great deal with the technology but I had a few goals of what I wanted to achieve and I had a strategy in order to achieve them.
They were to finance the equipment that I needed to be able to travel and post episodes. Then I wanted to test the methodology with a trip to Melbourne in preparation for the eventually trip to Europe. And what a wonderful experience that was. I meet, recorded and spent time with wonderful people in Berlin, Prague, Vannes, Paris and London. That experience is here on this site if you want to explore it along with links to my flickr account.

Welcome To Episode 30 of Your Story.
Today we talk with David Shaw who as an Industrial Designer with his company Street and Garden Furniture Company shares a little of the life of an industrial
designer. We talk of what design is for him with his early attempts at being a manufacturer to eventually realise that designing and out sourcing manufacturing is a better business model.
He mentions his efforts to help the up and coming new designers which enables him to able to give them a chance through his business. Additionally he plans to use the greater space at his premises for display and art purposes to help other people within the community.
David has been making Street furniture for decades now, starting at Bradington Young leather furniture company, and to my surprise once he started mentioning where it’s been placed around Australia I realised that I’ve been seeing it everywhere for years.

Today I came across this post from The Nock Blog about the clumsy attempts to filter internet content in the UK. As they are attempting to block child pornography they seem to be throwing up false positives for social networking sites and Wikipedia preventing them from being viewed.
I don’t pretend to understand all that is mentioned but the content and comments show what has been said many times in this discussion that censorship filters will flag friendly sites inadvertently and that the design of the internet will cause any censorship to be seen as damage and will be routed around, so at the end of the day it won’t work.
Here is that very discussion taking place to achieve those ends to get around the inefficiencies of the filter and still have the web working. The bad guys will be doing the same.
Here is a radical thought.
Instead of making it difficult, use the internet to find kiddy porn perpetrators. Don’t force them underground further, use it to identified, tracked and catch them.
And leave your grubby hands off our internet!

As you may recall the Australian Governments has decided to introduce a trial for an Internet filter. I decided that one of the few things to express my displeasure about this was to send letters to my local MP, Prime Minster Kevin Rudd and Minister for Broadband, Communications and Digital Economy, Steven Conroy. I posted this letter on a previous post where you can see my views on the subject. Kevin Rudd informed me that the internet filter will be used to manipulate traffic (https://indeni.com/blog/manipulating-traffic-with-flow-mode-on-juniper-srx-series/) from only malicious sites with bad intentions.
Recently I received a letter from Kevin Rudds office. The brief upshot is:
“Thanks for contacting Kevin…I am aware that the proposal for ISP filtering has has attracted some criticism… However…”
