Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be the opposite gender?

Or have you ever wondered how it is for someone who isn’t just curious but identifies with being the opposite sex?

I like many people have wondered these things from time to time. I’m happily a heterosexual male but I realise that there are some people in our community who feel different about their body and would love to have the opposite gender. What is that like and how does someone deal with it?

Today we talk with Lorelei, originally from Northern New South Wales but now living in Brisbane who is 18 months into transitioning from being a male electrician working in a sugar mill to a female natural therapist.

Now that must be some journey!

Lorelei and I talk about her early memories as a boy with some different feelings, then becoming and working with blokes but with a feminine twist,  eventually to migrating to a supporting community as she transitions to become one of the girls, including dealing with hormones, possible medical procedures and relationships. What a journey this must be.

I’ve been a Tad Busy with a Flood

What is needed to make it in music?

Welcome To Episode 47 of Your Story.

Cliff Hawkins story is of someone who in helping his own family with food allergies discovers that he has found a mechanism to help the greater community with some of the most damaging and deadly autoimmune diseases and cancers. Only then to be financially destroyed by the greed of a large corporation when he attempted to move his discoveries to the rest of society.

My local, wonderful sour dough bakery, Sol Bread recently started using an additive within some of their range that allow people with gluten intolerance to eat their bread. I immediately wondered how is this possible and what has been created that allows the bread to function during the baking process to still be as good as normal but doesn’t have the negative effects on people with these issues.

As many of us know wheat, dairy, soy and peanut/legume allergies cripple millions of people around the world with ill health effects from irritation to full blown life threatening Anaphylactic Shock and long term health issues.

I tracked down Cliff Hawkins of Biohawk to share with us exactly what he has developed, but I had no idea how deep this rabbit hole was to go.

Cliff explains that most food allergies come from the part of the protein within the food that is designed by nature to protect it from damage so that the plant can continue to utilise it for it’s needs. This protection mechanism unfortunately for some people is the cause of food intolerance.

As with 30% of the Australian population Cliff’s family, with it’s Irish heritage has a gene that reacts to these proteins in harmful ways, creating many dangerous health issues for his children and grand children. He set out 40 years ago to find a food and the relevant enzymes that would achieve the amazing task of neutralising these proteins. Using sound scientific processes gained as a medical research scientist he searched food sources dipping into knowledge known for centuries to discover within the ginger plant, specific enzymes that had the ability to cut out these dangerous proteins rending them harmless and making available all of the protein for digestion. Cliff explained to me that, within the individuals genome there are genes that when turned on, causing an immune response to these specific proteins.

Simply through the use of a natural, whole food in this unique way, Cliff has developed a product that makes the protein easily digested, with better nutritional value, tastier and without any health issues. I have no idea how Cliff has managed to pull this off but he has not synthesised anything or stripped out just the reactive components insofar as creating a substance that could be defined as a medicine but uses the whole ginger food. He has some limited, simple processing which I have no idea of but the essence of his work is that his product is nothing but ginger, so falls into the safety of the Pharmacopoeia as an accepted, approved additive to any food or medicine.

NB. According to the University of Maryland website, ginger has been used as a medicine in Asian, Indian and Arabic herbal traditions since ancient times. In China, ginger has been used to aid digestion and treat stomach upsets, diarrhoea and nausea for more than 2000 years. Ginger is also used by natural health practitioners to treat arthritis, colic, headaches, fever, swelling, heart conditions, the common cold and nausea associated with motion sickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy.

He claims that the more serious health conditions of auto immune diseases have a basis in food allergies caused by creating a hyperimmune system that attacks various parts of the body including diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Autism, Schizophrenia, ADHD, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and many others. These Autoimmune Diseases are due to the immune system sending proteins to make the B cells that make antibodies to attack the the dangerous pathogens disproportional to the threat, meaning the immune system is overreacting. These excess proteins then go on to react with the body, creating the auto immune disease. Cliffs product has the same effect on these proteins by cutting the excess proteins out, reducing them to normal levels, then allowing the body to return to normal.

That same strategy used by plants to protect their energy stores from being broken down are also used by viruses, bacterium and cancers to protect against the immune response of our bodies. These serious pathogens and cancers have a high proportion of these dangerous proteins on their surface which Cliff’s product has the effect of trimming off allowing the body to react and destroy the cells. The Ginger product simply removes their protection, so our immune system can do it’s job and destroy them and the danger.

Though there is ample evidence to show the benefits of Cliffs ginger products they are sold as Aid to Digestion only and the benefits will be dependant on individual circumstances and the conditions being treated.

Although this is hard science it also has an element of a craft, with a passion in caring for the greater community and realising that nature, in it’s whole has many of the answers for what we need.

Not only are these human health but also animal husbandry issues and like us, many farmed animals are grain fed and have many of these same health problems.  Cliff has discovered that the same health effects can be gained with animal health particularly with race horses, cattle and poultry. With animal health there are direct financial benefits to the owner of the stock justifying the use of the Animal Health range.

Having received his initial training at the prestigious John Curtin School of Medical Research, Cliff  is the former Professor of Chemistry, Dean of Science and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at University of Queensland  (Biological Sciences). This is his Linedkin Profile.

Welcome To Episode 32 of Your Story.

Today we talk with Andrew Leavold who has an alternative video store with nearly 20,000 tapes and DVD’s supplying all the odd, eccentric and obscure videos that have ever existed in all the genres imaginable.

Trash Video is the video version of the dusty old High Street Bookstore full of the old weird curios of the odd and eccentric that only the most passionate of owners can organise and know each of the individual items in the store. The vast majority of which aren’t available through the standard video stores.

The advantage Andrew feels  he has over the internet downloads is due to the fact that most of what is available in Trash Video isn’t available on the internet and so he feels that he is insulated in ways that the major video stores are not.

Andrew takes us through the journey of his childhood in Oman watching bootleg videos and creating fake satanic rituals as a six year old to the development of an alternative view on film from other children. He then moves us to Australia where his now restricted access to videos caused him to start collecting the substance of his interests for himself that eventually evolves into Trash Video.

Trash Video is now an important part of the support for Andrews’ other passion into discovering more about the Filipino film industry particularly in the worlds shortest leading man “Weng Weng”.

Weng Weng was a black belt in Karate who was discovered and played in Filipino James Bond spoof films. The bizarre thing with Weng Weng is that he is 2’9″ (84cm)tall and for a time was incredibly popular in the Philippines including within the Marcos family. Andrews’ story of searching for Weng Weng is not only a story of a flash in the pan novelty actor but also a story of his own obsession for the discovery of this person and the amazing coincidences and famous people that he has meet because of this journey.

Now Andrew has funding for the completion of the documentary film that has been started and can look forward to returning to the Philippines to tie all the story line together for release for all of us to see. Hopefully sometime in 2010.

This is a story of someone having a dream with no comprehension of how to do it and being able to manage to pull it off.

Welcome To Episode 30 of Your Story.

Today we talk with David Shaw who as an Industrial Designer with his company Street and Garden Furniture Company shares a little of the life of an industrial designer. We talk of what design is for him with his early attempts at being a manufacturer to eventually realise that designing and out sourcing manufacturing is a better business model.

He mentions his efforts to help the up and coming new designers which enables him to able to give them a chance through his business. Additionally he plans to use the greater space at his premises for display and art purposes to help other people within the community.

David has been making Street furniture for decades now and to my surprise once he started mentioning where it’s been placed around Australia I realised that I’ve been seeing it everywhere for years.

It’s strange for me to know that street lights, bollards, water bubblers and rubbish bins that I’ve walked past with scant regard all come from David and I just through coincidence happen to ask him onto Your Story.

Last week end I had a chance to make a presentation at BarCamp Brisbane. BarCamp is basically a geekfest, where pasty technophiles talk about stuff like code optimisation etc. Things that I know nothing of but since starting down this path of learning about the interwebs and how it works to produce content I’ve realised that I need to mix with those that know a lot more than me. For that reason I’ve taken a keen interest in twitter in particular as it is my conduit to all things informative and changing in this world that I’m learning.

Because of twitter friends and being involved in putting together a couple of twitter meetups I was invited to attend so I chose to speak.

My presentation was basically about what I’m doing here and how challenging the technology is and to thank all the geeks out there for producing the things that enable me to do this. Most of all I wanted to encourage them to continue to progress the tools to make it easier to produce what we’re really here for, Content!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve given any form of presentation and I enjoyed weaving a story of the struggles of this technology and how with perseverance it’s possible to overcome the issues but most of all it was good for me to tell what I’m doing and to sound out if there is an interest in Your Story

I would not be here doing this if it wasn’t for all those super bright geeks working late into the night living on pizza & coke getting off on what I’d be brain dead attempting. So I’d just like to say thank you to all of you for helping to give the rest of the world these amazing tools that enable us to generate things like Your Story.

You’ve given me more than you will ever appreciate.

Welcome To Episode 4 of Your Story Addendum.

Well the trip and testing of my method is over and I’m on my way home to Brisbane.
What I’ve learnt is that I can do this and that I have a lot of support from people as I travel to help me. I’m a little surprised that when I mention the idea that I’m collecting stories everyone seems to think it’s a great idea, which is heartening as I think it’s a good idea as well but I’m being utterly self indulgent with this show so I don’t necessarily think others will rock with the idea. Surprisingly they often do.

I need to continue to get faster at the post production of the episodes as I’ve found that I can spend a huge amount of time on the tiding up of the audio and I still don’t have it any where the standard that I want to eventually get to. I’d like if possible to be able to spend no more than twice the audio recording time in post production if I can. At the moment I’m probably spending about four times as long in post. Hopefully I’ll just get faster.

As I’ve mentioned before I don’t have much experience at travelling and this trip was to get me familiar with it again. That has worked brilliantly and it was a good idea to do it in a local but unfamiliar city rather than waiting until I get to Berlin and have the additional issues of culture and language.

So Melbourne went well. I’m a bit behind in getting the episodes out so I’ll attempt to get them out in the next week. Then I need to get the last of the things organised for the Eurodessy which is only five weeks away.

Welcome To Episode One of Your Story Addendum.

Today is the start of Your Story Addendum a mini podcast episode of the things that I observe as I travel to Melbourne initially where I’ll practice this technique as preparation for heading to Europe in July.

These episodes are recorded as MP3′s and aren’t edited as I want to get them out easily with the minimum of fuss. They are intended to have the information that is additional to the main podcast that would take away from it because of the more personal nature of it, hence the name.

They in no way are to replace the main podcast episodes which will still be fully produced and is the main reason for having Your Story.

In the back ground things are happening. Here is one of them…

There is a lot of things that need to be done to get this site and the podcast up to speed but one thing that I’ve learnt is that I don’t have to get everything right immediately and that it’s alright to just make do until I get something new into place.

One of the things is to get all the different options that are now available onto the site so that you can follow me in my travels to Melbourne and Europe which are mentioned at the top of the site.

I want you to be able if you chose to read, look, listen and watch me as I travel and meet people.

I’m still putting some things into place but what I’m managing to have a crack at today is to post a piece of video courtesy of seesmic so I can chat directly to you and give you a brief summary of what I’m up to and have a bit of a practice at using the technology.

I was thinking tonight about this process of building this podcast and the amount of effort that I’ve put into it not to mention the amount that I still need to do in order to get it up to speed.

In a previous post I mentioned that I’ve come from a base of no geek knowledge and everything I know about blogs, internet 2.0 and Podcasts I’ve learnt in the last 12 month. At times it’s been totally overwhelming the amount of knowledge that I’ve had to learn. However the advantage of having no idea of what I’m doing is that I’ve also had no idea of how much I had to learn.

Today, was an interesting experience.

I was contacted on twitter for a meetup in a couple of days and I thought that a WordPress blog would be a good way to set up a portal for information for interested people to get together and get the information as to where and when.

A WordPress blog eight months was my first taste of blogging and it took a day to set up and weeks to configure and understand. I’ve since set up five blogs for people including my mother. Well today I set up a new one in an hour and I thought, Wow I’ve come a long way and hadn’t realised it.

I just finished editing another podcast episode and as in every episode I did a couple of things that I hadn’t done before and I think it is the best to date. Mind you every episode should be the best to date I hope but on reflection I was overwhelmed in how much I still had to learn. Then I thought back to setting up the blog earlier.

I know that I have so much to still learn and at times it feels like I’ll never get there. I’ve bought a heap of new technology to help me to be mobile and produce this podcast on the road and the amount that I have to learn on top of everything else is well. Wow! But just look at how far I’ve come in 12 months.

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that I don’t have to know everything to get started. I just need to know enough to do the first thing and I can learn the bits that I need after that as I go along and as I need them. If I’d tried to learn everything before I started I would still be reading the books and wouldn’t have done a thing.

So I’m pleased that I have 13 episodes up a wealth of knowledge and plans for the future. There is still heaps to learn, understand and practice but that’s the journey of life and anyway if I knew it all I know I would get bored so it’s great that each day there is something new to get a grip of.

Today we talk with John Pene-Fonmosa who in explaining his heritage from the slavery of the South Sea Islanders known as Kanakas and their strong work ethic offers an opposing thought on the Sorry concept that is in the public mind at present.

He feels that the Aboriginal Australians should say sorry to the Australian populations for surprising reasons.

He has strong opinions on how fortunate we all are in Australia and how he is creating his own reality through the development of his Authentic Aboriginal Art Gallery in Brisbane.

Welcome To Episode Ten of Your Story.

Thanks everyone for your support. This being Episode Ten I see it as a small milestone of what will hopefully be bigger things into the future.

One of the great pleasures of working in a variety of different fields over the years is that I’ve has the advantage to meet with some amazing people and as a group the people in the film industry I find particularly fascinating. Today we talk with Dave Goldie who is one of those free thinking individuals that we meet from time to time who comes from the film industry but additionally has the adventuring spirit .

I worked with Dave on Matrix 2&3 in Special Effects where I always enjoyed his intellect and perspective on life that prompted me to think about things that I hadn’t always considered.

We discuss his views on working in the film industry and an opportunity lost to make a political statement at the Sydney Olympics.

Dave is now preparing for his latest adventure to Kite Sled around Hudson Bay, Canada in April an adventure I’m looking forward to hearing about.

UPDATE 14 May 2009

Since recording this episode Dave has been to Canada twice. Last year on the way to Hudson bay they were involved in a serious car accident where Dave was smashed up quite bad but still managed to do a considerable amount of Kitesleding.

This years expedition has been far more successful with some brilliant adventures.

Today we talk with Juan Mann of Free Hugs fame. You have probably seen the video, if not here it is.

A runaway viral success that has lead onto things greater than anyone could have imagined.

It all started for me when I saw on Twitter that Richard Giles had gone to visit Juan and I thought well there is a story in that!

So I found his Welcome To My Home site and asked if I could drop in, seeing how I was in Sydney. Generously, he agreed.

We talk about the runaway success that the video has become for him and what it has lead on to, including appearing on Oprah and Andrew Dentons Enough Rope along with opportunities that you would never write into a business plan.

Surprisingly this has lead to him developing a career as a public speaker enabling him to continue to get his message out there and to motivate others to follow their passion.

Today is Australia/Invasion/Survival Day and coincidentally I have a poignant theme.

Rod is a local in my area and when I asked him to tell me his story he just went off on the subjects that impassion him. I had to ask him to stop until I got my recorder as I found that he really had something to say about Australian society and our ill treatment of the native Aboriginal Australians of whom he is one.

Born in Western Australia and adopted by Dutch migrants he grew up in Holland only to return to Australia at 14 to prejudice from both the black and white communities and then to fall, like so many, into the cycle of addiction and prison.

He now has a career as a performer and artist, striving to make his world a better place.

What are you going to achieve this year? Will there be a change or more of the same old, same old…

This time last year I thought “I hope something interesting happens this year” as I had most years and like most years I was dreading that like at the end of ’06 nothing would change. But what would I have to do to create that change.

Then the concept of doing this podcast was just starting to form out of the mist of my mind and I didn’t really know about it. I felt optimistic that something would happen but that’s how I feel every year.

Well it was a different year. the first different year in many years.

First I dreamt up the idea of this podcast then I had the reinforcement of everytime I moved I received another bit of motivation from things that seemed to pop out of the ether to remind me that this is a good idea for me much like when your looking for a new car you see them everywhere because that is where your focus is.

I must say that one of the strongest motivations was Cameron Reilly’s podcast way back in May where he challenged us to Get Off The Bench which rung true to me and kept me focused. On reflection it’s still a motivation for me now. How do we change our world and if we are, to what are we going to change it into?

So for this year I have some plans.

• Keep this podcast and blog developing as I learn more about this technology and skills
• Continue to meet interesting people and get their stories out there
• Look for every opportunity for me to be able to move in a direction that means that I can spend more time and get more finished content out there
• Develop a way that I can fund this either from it or to support it

I have some plans for travel and I want to add a culturally different spin on the programme to reinforce the underlying theme that although we are all different we are all the same in the most fundamental ways and that through understand the personal stories the myths that we hear of others will fall away.

Another year awaits lets see where it leads.

USB interfaces including Zoom H4 as well as many firewire interfaces are having issues with Leopard.

This was a problem I thought wouldn’t have arisen as a couple of months back I couldn’t use my Behringer firewire interface with OS10.4.10. Eventually I had to go back to OS10.4.9. So I was glad to upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard thinking that all the problems would be gone which for the Behringer unit is so. However my Zoom H4 is having issues.

Yesterday I sent this email to a podcast Inside Home Recording

…when I plug in my H4 it shows that it is powered and connected to the Mac but it doesn’t come up on the desktop. Therefore I can’t get any data off. I’ve sent an email to Zoom Japan and they are aware of the issue. So as far as the Apple forums are concerned I’m snookered for the moment. Unless some one can come up with a solution I’ll be forced to download to another machine and burn disks to transfer the files. I may even have to use a PC Until this is resolved…

On Sunday I sent an email to Zoom Corporation and today to my surprise of Zoom efficiency I received an email and they have posted an Update for a Patch to fix this issue.

Tonight I downloaded from Zoom the file then uploaded the 2.10 operating system file as recommended using a card reader to put the file on a SD card and installed the new version of the operating system.

Now I have a fresh new operating system on my Zoom H4 and it is on my desk top through the cable connection just like on Tiger.

And it gets better…

It turns out that it was a good move as they had only gone to 2.0 in October and I hadn’t had a chance to get it and the screen font and some of the features seem to be an improvement. As yet I haven’t had much of a chance to get around the new operating system but some of the new features are…

1. Font Change
2. Battery Capacity/Type
3. Normalise Function & more…

Overall I think yet again Zoom has performed brilliantly with not only a great product but outstanding service to fix this compatibility issue so quickly.

On this blog I’ve referenced many times to the importance of understanding the ways of life that others live. By appreciating that we are all wanting a good life, a life of community and communication where we are both adding to our society and our own lives we develop a sense that we have purpose. This podcast is about exploring the different ways in which people live their lives and achieve the things that they have done in their lives to get them to the place that they are today.

In this first episode I explain why I’m motivated to achieve what I’m doing and the hopes that I have for you the listener.

It has taken months but at finally, just last night I managed to get my sites sorted and wordpress installed onto them properly. I have this site and a for the moment less important personal blog. The relief when I finally got them up was wonderful.

So today I am going to sort this site out. Due to the fact that I had to do a reinstall of this blog means that I have to reconfigure everything and reinstall the themes and plugins but that will only take a few hours then at long last I should be up.

After months of battling this technology… Yea!

 

Still I plod away at getting my podcast up and running.

Ever week I think I’m just a half day away from posting and then something comes along to sabotage me. The latest is that after having my sites tidied up so they are separated on my server and the podcast blog is in the .com url I find that I can’t access my blogs as the password doesn’t work and for some reason when I get a new password it doesn’t work either. So I’m hoping that I can get the help again to fix that.

So yesterday I decided to make a new opening intro and I went out and got some sounds on my Zoom H4 recorder, which is a top little unit, but when I get home to transfer to my mac it won’t see it on the desktop so I can’t access the files on the recorder. Bugger! I didn’t have this issue before but now on Leopard, well… Bugger! I’ll just have to wait till apple resolves this I suppose

So still I plug away every week learning more about this technology and get a little closer to being able to get it up and running. One day I’ll have all the issues resolved and I can concentrate on what I really want to do… Make an awesome podcast about Your Story.
