Awesome reply Tony.
I can't add anything but it helps to fill it all out a little more.
Thanks

Great topic Ian,

I liken the thought process to the 3 blind men and the Elephant, no not some kinky blind/beasty video nasty..... but the old story where each of the blind men approach the elephant and describe it,
One thinks it’s big and round with wrinkles, one thinks its long and thick like his legs and the other thinks it is thin and hairy.
Each only sampling a section of the total elephant.
The trick here I think is to Know that each person has only a small sample of the entire situation and therefore be open to learn more from all the other people and their sampling experiences.
Add to this our relatively very short life spans in the scheme of things.
The things that affect our natural tendencies are well entrenched in our history.
Not our written history but the actual history of how we got here.
Each successful preceding strategy of reproduction created the previous set of parents.
IE your parents met, procreated and successfully replicated.
Their Parents did the same, and their parents also did the same, and it goes back right to the beginning of life. Everything else resulted in something other than passing the genes down the line.
So let’s look at that, "Till the Beginning of time" That’s certainly a long time to wait at the bus stop, it’s even a much more incredibly long time on a treadmill.
It is also a lot longer than we each have to gather wisdom and learn about what it’s all about in our entire lives, even longer than we have been able to write it down for others to read after we have gone. Yet it still continues to happen whether we understand why we do any of it.
So... what I am trying to say is that no matter how much we don't understand why we do things, it doesn't alter the fact that we feel compelled to do them for many reasons.

Compare this to the restrictions and rules we install on each other as a society, {Different societies and cultures vary}{Just ask EVE}
Who here on this earth today has any real idea of why we do most things other than it's what we learned to do as children growing up.
It’s like a huge Congo line of humans following the human in front because it seems safer than turning 90 degrees and walking off the beaten path.
Go ahead ask the human in front of you, why do we do 'ANYTHING'

I bet they don’t know or at best they are like the blind men fresh from the elephant ready to deliver a proverbial thesis on why an elephant is long, thin and Hairy.

People in general don't question why we do the things we do.
It’s much easier to just accept 'What we do' as the things we do, and get back to gathering nuts and berries.

Most of the reasons for why we form relationships and do other such things comes straight back to how efficiently we can replicate and continue to replicate for as long as possible, we each try our strategy of life and see how it goes, every single one of our ancestors were successful in their endeavours, we, naturally will not be anywhere near as successful.

Only recently have we had the luxury of removing replication as a direct result of having sex. We still have the option, but it is now at least an option.
It will be truly interesting to see how this affects mankind over the next few decades.
The genes have met a whole new challenge. The prerequisite of being the best no longer applies, I think we have tripped over the path of evolution and mankind will pay dearly for it, but we have gained the option to try different strategies regarding relationships and sexual habits.
Women are now much more free to be promiscuous today than ever before and so are men, but they would have been anyway given half a chance, because they do not necessarily have to invest much energy into the raising of the children, they can just clear off if they choose and leave the burden to the mother. {I'm not saying it's what I promote, I'm just saying that it's a strategy that is taken by some.}

This recent development in birth control I believe will have a great effect on how we conduct our relationships and also a great effect how we survive as a species and it will be two very different paths.

I believe that a larger than obvious percentage of the population takes a different path to the monogamous relationship but is more willing to admit that they like Barry Manillow records in public.

I hope I am not too abstract for reading.
Cheers, Tony
